LiBeary Tree 2018

The LiBeary Tree 2018 showcases forty-eight bear ornaments representing the Library’s Wish List of children’s books they would like to add to their collection. Individuals are invited to choose a bear ornament from the tree & donate the funds to purchase that particular book for the Library. The books range from $5.00, up to $20.00. A variety has been selected including board books for small children, picture books, easy readers for beginning readers, and chapter books for older children. Books can be chosen in honor of an individual or in memory of a loved one. Or the donor can choose to be identified as the donor or remain anonymous. This project is being sponsored by the G.F.W.C. Modern Pioneers Study Club. For more information, please contact the Washington Public Library.

The Library is now participating in a nation-wide program called 1000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN.  Folders with information about the program, along with reading log sheets will be available when you register your child. The goal is for each child to have 1000 books read to them before starting Kindergarten. For every 100 books reached, the Library will  celebrate the milestone with a picture posted of the child. Small prizes will be given for motivation. When the final goal of 1000 books is reached, we will submit a picture of the child to the newspaper.

You can find out more at Come to the library to register your child and pick up your folder with  materials to get you started.

For more information, please contact the Library at 785-325-2114.

The following two books were donated to the Library:
Gravel and Grit; Childhood Memories of Life on a Kansas Farmby Rosemary Dahlberg.
Book Summary: Author Rosemary Dahlberg, daughter of Carl & Clara Dague, takes a look back to the Kansas farm located in the Ash Creek Community of Washington County where she grew up in the 1930s and 1940s. She shares her memories of how she met life’s issues head on. Life lessons involving her beloved dogs, her classmates, and her neighbors are experienced & lessons learned, sometimes the hard way. World War II, a tornado, and family loss all bring changes to Rosemary and her family.
(This book was donated in honor of all residents of the Ash Creek Community, both past and present, by Janet (Rowland) Keller.)
“Hometown Memories: Drive-In Movies and General Stores”

However several contributors have ties to Washington County, KS. Here are a few current & former residents that have shared their stories: Dennis Brungardt, Jerry Brungardt, Sandra Brungardt, Mary Finlayson, Dale Keesecker, Diane Miller, James (aka Jim) Smart, and Dan Thalmann.
